Artificial Pancreas ProjectJDRF's Artificial Pancreas Project stands on the cusp of a breakthrough that represents the first step toward dramatically improving the lives of millions of people with type 1 diabetes: an artificial pancreas, an automated system to disperse insulin based on real-time changes in blood sugar levels. JDRF's Artificial Pancreas Project brings together JDRF, founded 40 years ago by parents of children with type 1 and today the global leader in setting the agenda for diabetes research worldwide, and academic and business partners to aggressively work to speed the development and approval of automated systems for people with type 1 diabetes. In 2006, JDRF established the Artificial Pancreas Consortium to fund doctors and researchers across the world to advance this revolutionary way to treat and manage type 1 diabetes. Today the JDRF is historically are historically poised to translate research into the first steps toward real treatment options, by partnering with Animas, a Johnson & Johnson company that manufactures insulin delivery and glucose management systems, to develop a first-generation artificial pancreas. An artificial pancreas will enable people living with type 1 diabetes to better maintain blood sugar levels within a target range with minimal effort, essentially acting as an artificial pancreas. The results for millions will be better quality of life over an entire lifetime, and lower risks of complications. As JDRF's efforts accelerate to find a cure, the Artificial Pancreas will help more people see that day and provide a bridge to the eventual cure for type 1 diabetes.
